Another impressive display by the consistent George Xie conceding only half a point to Greg Canfell in the last round.

Over the October long weekend the NSWCA had an idea to run a weekender
with the usual g/60+10 sec time limit, but give players from interstate an
opportunity to travel up on the Saturday morning and as a result a dozen players
traveled from Canberra. Overall there were 72 players in the event which was a
comfortable number.
The
first round saw quite a few upsets with players beating or drawing with their
higher rated opponents. Some examples of this were Edwin Wu (1561) beating Jason
Hu (1898) and Anthony Pickering (1564) drew with a rusty WFM Slavica Sarai
(2078).
Round
2: Disaster struck with the NSWCA’s old laptop crashing. With your DOP writing
out pairing cards, Nick Kordahi saved the day. Nick fixed the computer and we
soldiered on! Thanks Nick.
Round
3: Most games went to rating, as the stronger players started to assert their
dominance. One exception to this was Vincent Suttor (1897) drawing with FM Greg
Canfell (2334). Well done Vincent!! Danny Bisson (1527) beat Sartaj Hans (1897).
Round
4: And then there were 5... Board One saw George Xie (2328) beat Gareth Oliver
(1948) and Bruce Murray (1927) beat Johnny Bolens (2095) after Bolens gave Bruce
about 3/4 of hour start. Talented ACT junior Junta Ikeda (1947) had a tough time
against Greg Canfell on board 3.
Round
5: The Xie machine rolled on, with George beating Bruce Murray on board 1.
Robert Sewell (1482) had good win over Paul Reynolds (1659) and Emma Guo (1002)
upset fellow junior Ben Harris (1576). Before round 6 I had a dilemma. Greg
Canfell had approached me and informed me that the pairings on the top board
were wrong, which to be fair to Greg they were. The dilemma arose when I had
informed other players of their pairings last night, and if I changed them,
players who had expected a particular opponent may not have received the
opponent they expected. It’s a case of your dammed if you do, and dammed if
you don’t. After some hesitation I decided it was unfair to change the
pairings. In hindsight I concede this decision was a mistake.
Round
6: This saw Brian Fitzpatrick (1880) from Canberra against George Xie on board
one, while Greg was paired with Milan Grcic (1834) and assignment much easier
than George. Both George and Greg ground down their opponents. Most of the other
games went to rating, though Adelaide Soltysik (1159) beat Frank Kresinger
(1528).
Round 7: George and Greg were finally paired against each other though
this pairing saw Greg having Black rather than White. George held Greg and as a
result won the event outright on 6.5/7.
With
regards the issue of the pairings in the 6th round and the possibility of
changing them then as previously mentioned I felt it would have been unfair for
those players who had requested the pairings before hand. Looking back this was
a very poor error in judgement. The pairings that I had posted were wrong, and I
was aware of that fact. The moral to this story is I should have checked the
pairings to see if they were correct, so I am not put in a situation where a
scenario like this occurs again.
This
should not have happened, but sadly I am unable to make right, what is now
clearly wrong. I would like to make a public apology to all the players who may
have suffered due any errors, especially Greg Canfell, Brian Fitzpatrick and
Milan Grcic who suffered most. I will endeavour
to see that such errors do not occur in future.
Much thanks must go to Greg Canfell who still thanked me for the arbitering work
I have done, a sentiment appreciated under the circumstance. As a result of this
I will in future make announcements that all pairings are provisional until they
are read just before the round starts.
