Forty eight players ventured out on a wet and windy Sunday morning to play in strongest and best attended NSW Lightning championship in for at least the last 5 years. There were 7 players over 2200 and 16 players in total over 2000. The star studded cast included previous winners Ronald Yu, George Xie, Stanislav Berezovski, Fred Flatow, Johny Bolens, John Curtis and Ivan Zirdum. Most of these players played and were defeated by IM Zong-Yuan Zhao who won the tournament with 11 wins from 11 games. The D.O.P Peter Cassettari stated that he could not remember the last time someone had won the NSW Lightning Championship with a perfect score. An excellent effort considering the strength of the field.
