I am sure Ralph would have been proud of the tournament held in
his honour and memory at his old stomping ground North Sydney Leagues club.
Ralph was the current NSW champion and had just won the North Sydney Leagues
Club Championship when he passed away in May last year.
Kat Lane, Ralph's partner and mother of their children presented the prizes. Kat
said she was happy to see Ralph's name carried on in this way, thanked the organizers
and said she would gladly return next year to do the honours again.
Igor Bjelobrk took out first place undefeated conceding his only draw in the
last round to Kevin O'Chee who was second. Third place was a 7 way tie between
Ronald Yu , Mark Ainsworth, Biljana Dekic , Jason Chan , Sim Navarro(also best
under 2000) , Barak Atzmon-Simon and Robert Hvistendahl(also best under 1800).
second under 2000 went to Jason Hu and Alex Mendes da Costa, second under1800
was John Redgrave and Nicholas Chernih. Ian Dickson was first under 1600 and
another 7 way for second in the under 1600 division Adrian Miranda, Andrew
Phillips, William Xu, Anthony Lo, Trent Parker, Gary Losh and Danny Bisson
all taking a share of the prize money.
The under 1400 division was won by Mitchell Barker with Kevin O'Rourke second.
23 players took prize money from this tournament, so there were a lot of smiling
faces at the prize giving.

Round 1 The first round saw upsets with newcomer 9 year old Ryan
O'Rourke drawing with Gary Losh and Anthony Lo punching well above his weight,
drawing with local chess heavy weight Jason Chan.
Round 2 Due to a double booking of the room we had to be out by 4:00pm so
only 2 rounds were held on Saturday. It was touch and go whether we would get
out of the room on time with the 10 second increment added the games can
theoretically go on for ever and some of them looked as is if they might. The
last game finished at 4:05pm luckily the club was understanding.
Upsets in round 2 included Redgrave over Bolens , Illingworth over Viner, Leong
over Bleicher and Christensen over Moore.
Round 3 This was the start of a hectic day for players and arbiter
alike. We had to pack 4 rounds and the prize giving ceremony into the one day.
Only one player turned up late missing the numerous announcements and the notes written on the
pairing sheet. Not bad I expected more as the timetable had only been
changed 4 days before. The juniors were on the rampage again with Adrian Miranda
winning over a seriously time troubled Phil Viner and Ryan O'Rourke
holding Horst Bleicher to a draw.
Round 4 After 3 rounds we had 4 leaders on 3/3 Igor Bjelobrk, Kevin
O'Chee, Ronald Yu and Barak Atzmon-Simon these players were paired with each
other. Ronald and Kevin drew and Igor defeated Barak. It was a hard fought round
with 3 of the top 4 boards drawing. Another notable draw was Justin Cheung 940
holding Douglas Moore 1520 to a draw.
Round 5 After 4 rounds there is an outright leader Igor Bjelobrk on
4/4 and 15 other players within a point of the lead. Igor maintained his
lead by defeating Ronald Yu. Kevin O'Chee slipped into outright second with a
win over Raymond Song. William Xu held Danny Stojic to a draw and Mitchell Barker
had an upset win over Douglas Moore.
Round 6 A quick draw on board 1 saw Igor secure 1st place and left Kevin
O'Chee on 5 points with at least a share of second, as it turned out the other
players on 4 points drew and Kevin took second outright. Our overseas visitor
from Scotland Mark Ainsworth performed at 1981 showing his Scottish
"grading"(as they are called in Scotland) of 2001 was very compatible
