International Master Alexander Matros undefeated in the 2005 NSW Rapidplay
The 2005 NSW Rapidplay was won by visiting International Master Alexander Matros. Alexander based in New York is originally from Kazakhstan and is visiting Australia. IM Matros completed the tournament undefeated needing only a draw in the last round to clinch outright victory. It was good to see five unrated players participating, with junior Evan Law winning the unrated prize with a performance rating of 2022(according to Swiss Perfect). Vladimir Smirnov played well to gain outright second place dropping only one game to the eventual winner. IM Gary Lane was outright 3rd. The under 2000 prize was won by Lee Jones. The under 1800 prize was won by the ever improving junior Benjamin Harris(performance rating of 1947).NSWCA treasurer Norm Greenwood won the under 1600 prize and Vilko Salecich won the under 1400 prize. The tournament went smoothly except that one spectator had to be ejected from the tournament room when his mobile phone went off as he stood next to two IMs deep in thought. The numbers were down on last years Rapid and the prize money had to be scaled down. Many thanks to those who helped with setting up and putting away the equipment, especially NSWCA treasurer Norm Greenwood without who's efforts these tournaments would not be possible.
