The CJS Purdy Centenary Tournament was held to celebrate 100 years since the birth of Cecil Purdy . Cecil was the first world Correspondence Chess Champion in 1953, Australia's top player for many years and probably the greatest contributor to Australian chess journalism through his books and chess magazines.
60
players was an excellent turnout with players travelling from Victoria and
Queensland to compete. First place was shared by the two FMs Igor Bjelobrk and
George Xie with Armen Ayvazyan and Patrick Halpin sharing third. Patrick also
took the special prize for the best performance by a player who had actually
played CJS Purdy.
Report by DOP Nick Chernih Below
A strong field showed up for the commemoration of CJS Purdy's 100th birthday, with 13 2000+ players, Igor Bjelobrk and George Xie being the top two seeds. The event was capped with a special prize for the best result by a player who had actually played CJS Purdy.
Round 1 saw few upsets, however, two promising junior created very large upsets, with John Papantoniou (813) beating Michael Gl Dunn(1853), and Ryan O'Rourke (660) defeating Arthur Huynh (1842).
Round 2 saw a few drew mark the top of the table, as George Xie drew to Ivan Zirdum, and Ian Parsonage drawing to Philip Viner. Meanwhile, Barak Atzmon-Simon lost to Svetosar Stojic.
Round 3, and even the top seed couldn't find a win against Pat Halpin, being made to work for the draw, and our 3rd seed, Ian Parsonage, suffering a defeat to the hands of Herman Rachmadi. Meanwhile, Barak Atzmon-Simon got a dose of luck, offered a draw by Marik Baterowicz in a lost game. John Papantoniou continued to play well, drawing with Anthony Pickering.
Round 4 saw George Xie drop another half point, this time to Dusan Stojic, who's recent results have been very promising. Meanwhile, Tomek Rej and Armen Ayvazyan, 4th and 5th seeds respectively, moved up to 4/4 to share the lead, with wins over Neil Wright and Johnny Bolens respectively. John Papantoniou and Barak Atzmon-Simon were in the thick of things again, as john managed another draw, this time against someone over 1200 points higher than him.
Round 5, things are starting to get to the business end. Armen Ayvazyan defeated Tomek Rej in a complicated endgame to take the outright lead, half a point in front of the dangerous Igor Bjelobrk.
Round 6 The clash on the top board between Igor and Armen ended in a tough draw, allowing a few to catch up to Armen, although he still maintained a half point lead over the field leading into the last round. However, a strong pack was looming behind him, with Igor, George, Tomek and Dusan all looking to pounce.
In the penultimate round, Armen suffered his only defeat of the tournament to George Xie. On other boards, Igor Bjelobrk outplayed Tomek to share first place with George on 6/7. Dusan missed his chance to catch them, by losing to Pat Halpin, who ended up sharing 3rd with Armen, and Pat also took out the special prize for being the highest scorer who had actually played CJS Purdy. Tied on 5th were Dusan, Tomek, Kevin O'Chee, Johnny Bolens, Neil Wright, and Ivan Zirdum, who has been making his presence felt among the strong players in recent tournaments.
