ETTALONG  BEACH CHESS CLUB

Winter Tournament

Barry Shearwood who usually plays at Gosford Club lent his strength to our Winter Tournament and proceeded to vanquish his opponents – stiffest opposition perhaps came from Keith and their was a real thriller diller with one critical turn to which there was no going back.

We wish to advise that the Ettalong Beach Chess Club held a Winter Tournament during the months of June and July.   It was a Round Robin consisting of eight players.

[notes by Keith Farrell]

1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 0–0 5.Bc4 e6 [ 5...Nxe4 6.Bxf7+ ( 6.Nxe4 d5 interesting - since I pulled this same trick not half an hour beforehand) ] 6.Bg5 Qe8? 7.0–0 [ 7.e5 Ng4 8.h3 Nh6 9.Ne4 Nf5 10.Nf6+ Bxf6 11.Bxf6 I doubt I would have played this lunacy anyhow !] 7...d6 8.Re1 Nfd7 9.e5 Nb6 10.Bb3 d5 do we believe in such things as good and bad bishops - with the centre seemingly set in concrete 11.a4 a silly idea of supporting a knight on b5 11...a6 12.a5 Nc4 13.Bxc4 dxc4 14.Qe2 Qc6 I should have known something was up when I had convinced myself that there was no protection Barry could play and then a series of completely unanticipated - though normal - moves followed 15.Ra4 b5 16.axb6 Qxb6 17.Rxc4 Nc6 18.d5 Na5 times left - W - 40 B - 41 19.Be3 Qxb2 20.Rxc7 Bb7

21.Rb1! Qa3 22.Rbxb7?? can you say 'rushed move(s)' ?, very VERY shallow thinking [ 22.Bc1 I found this almost instantly postgame - it may have been catastrophic had I seen it just after I let go the piece] 22...Nxb7 23.Rxb7 Qxc3 completely losing sight of the connection between Rook and Knight 24.d6 [ 24.Bd4 Qc8 25.Rb3] 24...Bxe5 shoddy 25.Bd2? Qa1+ times W - 24 B - 31 26.Be1 Bxd6 and now I have precisely NO central pawns ! 27.Ng5 desperado tactics 27...Qe5 28.Qxe5 Bxe5 29.g3 h6 30.Nxe6?? and here I thought my Rook was on b6 - idea to clear off a cople or 3 black pawns 30...fxe6 31.Rb6 Rfe8 32.Kg2 a5 33.f4 Bg7 34.g4 a4 I'd had enough - white resigned 0–1
