WOLLONGONG COLLEGIANS 2002 CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

9 Round Swiss - Completed (19-Nov-2002)

BARRY COX drew the last round of the 2002 Wollongong Collegians Chess Championship knowing that the half point would clinch the 2002 title on tie-break. Seeded 7th with a rating of 1693 Barry was unbeaten in the tournament scoring 6 wins and 3 draws (7.5/9).

MICK GROSS played equally well (7.5/9) also unbeaten with 6 wins and 3 draws. 

JOHN MAZZIERI was 3rd (6.5/9).

ZELJKO KANOSTREVAC WINS 2002 KNOCK OUT
21-May-02
Seventeen Players participated in the Knock-Out which was formated along 
the lines of the FIDE World Championship. (2 NORMAL games, followed by 2 
RAPIDPLAY, and as many 5 min BLITZ as required to tie-break).
Congratulations to Zeljko Kanostrevac who held Mustafa Erkan to a draw in 
their second fully timed game, thereby winning the 2002 KNOCK-OUT.
Final placings were - 1st Zeljko Kanostrevac, 2nd Mustafa Erkan, 3rd Steve 
Ascic, 4th Martin Barakat, 5th Mick Gross, 6th Kosta Beretov, 7th Oscar 
Murtezani, 8th John Mazzieri, 9th Wolfgang Brodesser, 10th Barry Cox, 11th 
Jason Hutchinson, 12th Zivko Simonovski, 13th Sebastian Yuen, 14th Matthew

MICK GROSS WINS 2002 WOLLONGONG COLLEGIANS FEBRUARY RAPIDPLAY (ALL/30 mins 
- 2 games per night)
Completed 12-Mar-02.
14 Players contested the Wollongong Collegians 2002 February RAPIDPLAY 
(ALL/30 min).
The result was a very strong performance by Mick Gross who finished 2 
points clear of second place Kosta Beretov. Mick was undefeated in the 
tournament in which he only conceded two draws.
Kosta Beretov was placed second while Barry Cox was 3rd.
Congratulations to all who competed in a very friendly, enjoyable and 
incident free tournament.
The Final results were Mick Gross 12, Kosta Beretov 10, Barry Cox 9.5, 
Oscar Murtezani 8.5, Senad Kunosic 8, John Mazzieri 7.5, Wolfgang Brodesser

ZELJKO KANOSTREVAC - WOLLONGONG COLLEGIANS 2001
 CHESS CHAMPION
 The Wollongong Collegians Chess Club completed the
 Club Championship on 11-Dec-2001. 
 Twelve players competed in the A-Grade Round-Robin
 while eleven competed in B-Grade. The time limit was
 40/90 all/30.
 A-Grade
 Zeljko Kanostrevac played extremely well (7.5/11) to
 gain equal 1st with higher rated Mustafa Erkan and
 was
 declared 2001 Champion based on tie-break. Steven
 Ascic was placed 3rd (7/11). Other scores were M
 Gross, J Mazzieri (6.5); B Cox (6.0); O Murtezani, J
 Dybowicz (5.0); P Banner, W Brodesser (4.5); Z Bosev
 (3.5); K Beretov (1.5).
 B-Grade
 Greg Roach was declared 2001 B-Grade Champion (on
 tie-break) after coming equal 1st with Peco
 Petkovski
 (7/10). Brendan Serelak was placed 3rd (6.5). Other
 scores were Z Simonovski (6.0); A Suryak, S Yuen
 (5.5); M Sweeney (3.5); V Reid (3.0); G Fitzgerald
 (1.0); G Andrews (0.0); S Davidovich withdrew.
 Sabastian Yuen won the Junior prize. 
 
 MIRKO KREZNOVIC - WOLLONGONG COLLEGIANS 2001 BLITZ
 (5min) CHAMPION
 Five evenings throughout the year are devoted to
 Blitz
 (5 min) Round Robin Tournaments. The results are
 recorded as a percentage. Each player's best 3
 results
 are averaged at the end of the year and used to
 determine the Wollongong Collegians BLITZ Champion.
 Mirko Kreznovic retained his Blitz Championship
 title
 scoring 82.59%, Zoran Bosev was 2nd scoring 80.72%
 and
 Mustafa Erkan was 3rd with 70.61%.

ERKAN WINS KNOCK-OUT IN WOLLONGONG

The Wollongong Collegians Chess Club completed a FIDE World Championship 
style Knock-Out Tournament on 27th of August.
16 players competed in a series of 4 matches over 8 weeks. Each match 
consisted of 2 x 60 min games followed by 2 x 15 min Rapidplay games and 5 
min Blitz games. The Rapidplay and Blitz games were only played if required 
to tiebreak.

closely contested by 14 players and was completed on
10-Apr-01. 
1st Prize - Kreznovic (11/14) won the event by 0.5
points only dropping games to Murtezani and Gross.
2nd Prize - Mustafa Erkan (10.5/14) with losses to
Kreznovic and Mazzieri and a draw with Kanostrevac.
3rd Prize - Mick Gross (10/14) with a loss to Erkan
and 4 draws.
1st Unrated Prize - Ken Jones (7/14) - 2nd Unrated
Prize - Barry Cox (5.5/14) - Random Prize - Zivko
Simonovski (5.5/14)

Lloyd Fell

Toukley 2001 winner Lloyd Fell .


Eighty two year old Lloyd Fell demonstrated he still has the "stuff" by winning the Toukley 2001 Chess Tournament. Lloyd was ranked No 4 in the ratings. He finished on 6/7, dropping one game to the ever improving David Castor. Nick Kordahi, Milosav Markovic, Stevan Jovanovic, and David Castor shared the under 1800 prize, Brendan Norman won the under 1600 prize and Simon Louie won the under 1400 prize. The Best Game Prize was won by Mariusz Jarek who also shared second place with Kerry Stead.

19 Players enjoyed Christmas Chess in Laurieton with festive decorations and 
refreshments. 14 year old Taree Player Peter Varela emerged the winner of 
this event with 6/7, draws to Phillip Brown and Sandor George. Final result:

Wollongong Collegians Chess Club

2000 Championship - 12 December 2000
Fourteen players contested the closely fought 7 Round Swiss. The result saw
Mirko Kreznovic and Mustafa Erkan share the first place prize money with a
result of 6/7. Mirko Kreznovic was declared 2000 Club Champion based on
tiebreak. Zeljko Kanostrevak, John Mazzieri, Kosta Beretov, Paul Baaner and
Barry Cox shared third place (all on 4/7).
Zeljko Kanostrevak had the best rating based performance.

2000 BLITZS CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS - 1st Mirko Kreznovic (80.30%), 2nd Vlade
Stojkovski (75.76%) and 3rd Steve Ascic (67.19%).
The Club Blitz championship was held throughout the year. Five Round-Robin
Tournaments were played, and the best 3 results were used to determine the
winners.
