Presidents Message
Hi everyone,
This newsletter is a bit late, since the main item to report is the Dubbo RSL open held in March. The tournament was played over the weekend of 15th and 16th March and the winner was defending champion John-Paul Wallace (again). It was another successful event for Dubbo attracting nineteen players from around the state. It is always greatly appreciated for these players making the trip to Dubbo, and many thanks are owed to the RSL Club who gave us such an attractive top class venue to play in. It was also wonderful to have John-Paul here again, with his girl friend Ingrid this time. He is an International Master and one of Australia's top players. Final standings and crosstable can be found below. A dinner was held at the Jaya Raya restaurant on the Saturday night, and was a very enjoyable event, with most of the players turning up, many with their families or friends. It’s worth mentioning that we had 3 local juniors venturing into the world of rated chess tournaments, Luke Richards, Ian Edwards and Jonathan Yeong. Luke had a fine win over Roy Dennis.
Other news involves the Doeberl Cup in Canberra. This is one of Australia's premier tournaments and Alexander Aich from our club went down over the Easter weekend to try his luck in the minor division. Unfortunately he was up against a lot of strong up-and-coming juniors who gave him a hard time. He still had a couple of good games, with the notes to his first round encounter in the games section below.
Our regular raffle night at the RSL was held on Friday the 23rd May. Wayne Bredin and myself went along to sell raffle tickets for the meat trays. The club is paid $50.00 for our help so it is a worthwhile cause. The money goes towards equipment and running costs of the club, including the costs in running tournaments. Volunteers are always appreciated for this job.
We are planning another picnic in the chess park (corner Brisbane and Tamworth Streets), to be held on Sunday 22 June starting at 12:30pm. Family and friends are welcome. Bring your own picnic lunch, drinks, folding chair and sun hat. We will also have the big chess pieces available to play outdoor chess.
The yearly Junior Chess Tournament will be held at the Dubbo Christian School Hall on Thursday 3rd July, starting at 10:00am. Entries should be in by 13th June and any inquiries directed to Alexander Aich, the director of play. This promises to be a big event with schools from all around the area sending teams. It will be run as two separate tournaments, for primary and secondary students. The entry fee is $7.50 for each team of three. Volunteers to help on the day will be needed to make this event work, so if you are able to help please let Sandy know.
