Toukley Under 2000 played 2nd & 3rd March 2002

Winter Wins in Sunny Toukley in autumn!

53 players with what seemed to be a small busload from Canberra most of them the Oliver family

The time limit of 30 minutes with 30 second increments in the Fischer was new to most of us certainly OTB. The DOP gave a full and patient explanation of both the setting and its implications for combatants during a game much appreciated. Even though I had played about 600 games over the ‘net with increments these here were not blitz and not over the net, so many of us played a little faster than usual and it reminded me of my first few tournaments with any sort of clock, so not much new there. I did find in a couple of instances some slight unsettling with my usual routine for time handling (such as looking down and noticing that I had used less than 15 minutes over the 1st fifteen moves) but there were lots of players who handled their time admirably, as well as one or two who went to pieces one certainly who threw away a totally won game in some sort of unneeded panic.

Well over a dozen juniors with the Harrises; Behne-Smiths; Olivers out in force, confirming what we locals already knew that the Central Coast is perfect for family outings, chess or no chess.

Winner George Winter dropping only half a point and a clear leader by a full point

Only 3 months before Bernard had played on board 2 of the Newcastle University team that came 3rd in the NSW Country Teams Championship - he is also the NSW Country Individual champion for 2001 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 so I was on the lookout for a King's Gambit 2...Nf6?! and yet my hand was impelled to make this pretty grim move, and yet my usual defence against it is pretty poor too 3.f4 exf4 4.e5 Qe7 5.d4 d6 6.Bxf4 dxe5 7.dxe5 Nc6 8.Bb5 Bd7 9.Qe2 and the pressure builds ... 9...Nd4 10.Bxd7+ [10.exf6 would have been interesting, I suppose - I'm glad I didn't have to face it 10...Qxe2+ 11.Ngxe2 Nxc2+ 12.Kf2 Nxa1 13.Bxd7+ Kxd7 14.Rxa1 Bc5+ 15.Kf3] 10...Nxd7 11.Qe4 Nc6 12.Nd5! 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Nf3 Qb6 6.Be2 yesterday I played my rather usual half-serious Bd3, which of course he didn't fall for I never think they would - only once has a player done so - and that from a Sicilian defence, but even though I won (largely thru my opponent running low on time at a critical point) I just wasn't comfortable with the position 6...Nge7 7.0-0 g6 8.b3 Bg7 9.Re1 Nf5 10.dxc5 Qxc5 11.Bd3 Nfe7 12.Be3 Qa5 13.b4 Qc7 14.Bf4 0-0 15.Nbd2 Bd7 16.b5 Na5 17.Rc1 Qc5 18.c4 dxc4 19.Nxc4 Nxc4 20.Bxc4 Nd5 21.Bxd5 Qxd5 22.Qxd5 exd5 23.a4 Rac8 24.Red1 Rxc1 25.Rxc1 Rc8 26.Rxc8+ Bxc8 27.Nd4 Bd7 28.Bg3 Bf8 29.f4 Bg4 30.h3 Bd1 31.a5 Bc5 32.Bf2 Bxd4 33.Bxd4 Be2 34.Bxa7 Bxb5 35.Kf2 Bd3 36.g4 Kf8 37.h4 Ke7 38.Ke3 Be4 39.Kd4 Bf3 40.g5 Ke6 41.Bc5 Kf5 black offered a draw, It looked like a draw to me as well, but that b-pawn held my attention and I thought Karthick's Bishop was on the wrong side of his pawns - but then so was mine, and he seemed to me to wander with his king in maybe the wrong direction 42.Ke3 Bg2 43.Bb4 Ke6 black offered a draw 44.Kd4 Bf3 45.Bc3 Kd7 46.Kc5 Kc7 white offered a draw
